Before I share all my Singapore travel tips, let me give you a quick rundown of what to expect when you visit this city-state.

Located on a small island south of Malaysia and near Indonesia, Singapore is perfect for your first trip to Asia or as a start/end point for your Southeast Asia backpacking adventure.

Singapore can be expensive and has some strict rules, but it’s also incredibly modern, clean, safe, and green

I loved walking around the city and was surprised by the number of parks and all the contrasts – modern skyscrapers next to historic temples, busy hawker centers right by Michelin star restaurants.

And honestly, watching the Gardens by the Bay light show was absolutely incredible and probably the highlight of my entire first trip to Singapore. I think it’s a must on any Southeast Asia bucket list!

Singapore might not be exactly like the movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” but trust me, it’s even better in real life! Now, let’s get into all the things I wish I knew before visiting Singapore.

1. Singapore Can Be Very Expensive

Singapore is absolutely stunning and worth visiting, but it’s definitely not budget-friendly.

When it was my first time in Singapore, I thought I was ready for the high prices, but I was still shocked when I paid over $40 SGD for an 8-bunk hostel without curtains. Lesson learned! Now, I always book capsule hotels in Singapore.

Because of the high costs, I usually recommend spending about three days in Singapore before heading to cheaper destinations in Asia like Thailand or Sri Lanka.

Despite being one of the world’s most expensive cities, there are plenty of free things to do in Singapore. One of the essential things to know when traveling to Singapore is to take advantage of these free attractions!

Some of my favorite free activities in Singapore are:

• Catching the free light show at Gardens by the Bay
• Exploring Little India and Chinatown
• Admiring the Waterfall at Jewel Changi Airport
• Taking photos with the Merlion
• Wandering around Fort Canning Park

• Hiking the beautiful Southern Ridges

3. Be Ready for the Heat and Rain

There’s really no best or worst time to visit Singapore because it’s hot and humid all year round with rain almost every day. And no, unfortunately, you won’t find any snow in Singapore!

Coming from Spain, I thought I could handle the heat, but I nearly passed out on my first day out exploring Singapore.

The good news? Singapore is fully equipped for both the heat and rain. Most walkways are covered, and there’s icy air conditioning in almost all major hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls..

So, my top Singapore travel tips? Do your outdoor activities early in the morning to avoid the worst of the heat. And always carry a jacket, an umbrella, and some sunscreen.

4. Watch Out For Weird Singapore Laws

You’ve probably heard about Singapore’s quirky laws, right? They might sound wild, and the penalties can be super harsh – even the death penalty in some cases. But honestly, they really do keep the city nice and clean.

Here are some things to know when traveling to Singapore:

• No chewing gum.
• No feeding pigeons.
• No spitting or littering.
• No jaywalking.
• No vaping or smoking in public places.
• No bringing durian on public transport.
• No urinating in elevators.
• No keeping cats in flats.
• No singing offensive songs in public.
• No playing musical instruments in public.

5. Most Singaporeans Speak Excellent English 

One of the nicest things to know about Singapore is how multicultural it is. You’ll find people from all over the world living here, which reminded me of my time in Montreal, Canada.

If you speak English, you won´t have any trouble getting around Singapore– it’s one of the official languages, along with Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil.

Learning a few phrases in the other languages can be helpful, but I got by just fine with English and a bit of Google Translate.

But heads up, Singaporean English (aka “Singlish”) can be super fast and mix in words from other local languages. It takes some getting used to, but if I, a Spanish speaker, can understand them, so can you!

6. Eat At The Hawker Centers

Looking to save money when traveling to Singapore? Head straight to the hawker centers. This is one of my top Singapore travel tips!

Fancy restaurants can set you back around $200 SGD, but at hawker centers, you can get amazing Singaporean food for just $3 or $4 SGD per meal! Some of my favorite hawker centers are Lau Pa Sat, Maxwell Food Centre, and Chinatown Complex.

Just follow the locals to the stalls with the longest lines – that’s usually where the best food is!

7. Grab a Local Sim Card When Traveling to Singapore (Or Not)

Staying connected is a big deal for me when I’m traveling solo, so I usually get a local SIM card first thing in any new country, including Singapore.

But honestly, Singapore is the one place where I kind of regret it. SIM cards can be pricey, and Wi-Fi coverage is fantastic, available almost everywhere.

So, unless you’re staying for a while or really need mobile data on the go, sticking with Wi-Fi hotspots might be enough for your first time in Singapore.

8. Fill Out Your Arrival Card Online

Here’s another thing I wish I knew before traveling to Singapore: you need to fill out your arrival card online.

You can do it for free on the official website or the MyICA mobile app. Do it at home before your trip or at the airport (but honestly, I don’t recommend waiting until the airport because I had trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi on my first time in Singapore).

Doing this means you won’t need to see a passport agent when you land. Just tap your passport, take a quick photo, provide your fingerprint, and you’ll be through immigration in less than 30 minutes. It’s so efficient!

9. Singapore is Extremely Safe

As a solo female traveler, I was thrilled to learn that Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world. And let me tell you, it absolutely lives up to the hype!

I felt completely at ease exploring the city on my own.

I even took public transportation at night to watch the Gardens by the Bay light show, and never had any issues or felt uncomfortable.

However, it’s always wise to stay alert and pack some women´s safety essentials. Petty theft can still happen, especially in crowded areas like Chinatown or Orchard Road.

10. Almost Everything Is Cashless

In Singapore, most places accept credit cards like Visa or Mastercard, so you often won’t need much cash.

However, some hawker center stalls and street vendors only take cash, so it’s always handy to have some Singaporean dollars on you (1 USD = 1.36 SGD).

Unlike in the US, tipping isn’t expected in Singapore, though it’s always appreciated.

I usually just withdraw money at the airport when I arrive. But if you prefer, there are money changers around the city, with some of the best rates in Little India.

11. Use Public Transport to Get Around Singapore 

One of the best things to know about Singapore is how fantastic the public transport system is. 

The buses and MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) trains are clean, efficient, and easy to use. Plus, they’re super affordable, with rides usually costing just $1-2 SGD.

If you’re up for it, walking between Singapore attractions is also a great option. But when your feet are tired or you’re in a hurry, Grab is a convenient ride-hailing app to use since there’s no Uber in Singapore.

How To Buy MRT Tickets in Singapore

For me, paying with my phone was the easiest option. If you prefer something else, you can use a regular credit card, grab an EZ-Link card (perfect if your bank charges high fees), or get a 3-day tourist pass (only worth it if you plan to use public transport a lot).

Remember: each person needs their own card or device, and make sure to tap in and out of stations – you’re only charged when you exit.

12. Pack A Travel Adapter When Traveling to Singapore

Singapore uses the same three-pronged outlets as the UK. So, one of the crucial things to know when traveling to Singapore is to pack a travel adapter.

I learned this the hard way during my first time in Singapore when I forgot to bring one and had to rush around to find an adapter. It was such a hassle!

If you’re coming from the USA, also make sure your devices are compatible with Singapore’s 230-volt system. Some hotels might offer voltage converters, but it’s best to be prepared and bring your own.

13. Toilets Are Surprisingly Clean and Tidy

This might sound a bit random, but it’s worth mentioning! Toilets in Singapore are spotless and very well-maintained. Cleanliness is a big deal here, and believe it or not, it’s illegal not to flush – just one of those quirky laws in Singapore.

You’ll find spotless toilets everywhere, from hawker centers and MRT stations to shopping malls and luxury hotels. If you need to use a restroom in a pinch, just walk in confidently – chances are, no one will question you.

Occasionally, you might come across a squat toilet, but don’t worry, Western-style toilets are usually nearby.

14. Alcohol Is Super Expensive In Singapore 

If you’re used to cheap drinks back home, alcohol prices in Singapore might shock you. Even a simple beer at a hawker center can cost more than your entire meal!

To save money, consider stocking up on duty-free alcohol at the airport when you arrive.

For my fellow female travelers, here’s a tip: Wednesdays are ladies’ night in Singapore. Women often get free entry to bars and clubs, and sometimes even free drinks. It’s a nice perk to keep in mind, though I have mixed feelings about it!

15. Explore Beyond the City Center

Sure, visiting all the iconic spots like Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands is a must when traveling to Singapore. But don’t just stick to the touristy areas! Exploring the ethnic neighborhoods and hidden gems is one of the best things to know about Singapore.

I had an amazing time wandering through Chinatown, savoring the delicious food in Little India, and taking Instagram-worthy photos at Kampong Glam. It’s a fantastic way to soak up the local culture and see a different side of the city!

16. Book Ahead When Traveling To Singapore

As I mentioned earlier, Singapore isn’t the cheapest destination, and you’re probably planning to stay just a few days.

So, make sure to plan your Singapore itinerary and book tickets and reservations in advance, even if you’re visiting Singapore in winter.

You don’t want to miss out on your favorite Singapore attractions or restaurants because they’re sold out!

Booking ahead not only helps you avoid long queues in the heat but also guarantees you a spot at all the best things to do in Singapore.

17. Foreigners Can Enter Casinos For Free

Here’s a good thing to know when traveling to Singapore: foreigners can enter casinos for free by showing their passport and immigration card barcode. Locals, on the other hand, have to pay a daily $150 SGD fee.

Singapore has two main casinos, Resorts World on Sentosa Island and Marina Bay Sands.

They’re not quite like the ones in Las Vegas, but they do offer air conditioning and some budget-friendly dining options. While I’m not a gambler, you might want to try your luck!

18. Singapore is a Shopper’s Paradise

One of the things to know about Singapore is that it’s a shopper’s dream come true.

If you’re into luxury brands, Orchard Street is the place to be. You’ll find some of the best shopping malls in Singapore, like Paragon and Ion Orchard. These malls offer a huge variety of products, icy-cold AC to beat the heat, and stores that stay open until 10:00 pm.

But if you’re looking for for cheap Singapore souvenirs, head to spots like Bugis Street Market, Chinatown Street Market, or the legendary Mustafa Center in Little India, which is open 24/7.

19. Visiting Gardens By The Bay Is Completely Free 

If it’s your first time in Singapore, you absolutely have to check out Gardens by the Bay. It’s a stunning place, and the best part is that access to the main gardens is completely free!

There are five paid attractions within: Cloud Forest, Flower Dome, Skywalk, Supertree Observatory, and Floral Fantasy. But don’t worry, there are plenty of free things to do in Gardens by the Bay!

Top Tips For Visiting Gardens By The Bay

• Check Closures: Verify monthly and weather-related closures before buying tickets.
• Timing: It’s hot and crowded, so visit early in the morning or just before sunset.
• Queues: Expect lines, especially at the Skywalk before sunset.
• Events: Keep an eye on the official website for special events and seasonal displays.
• Comfortable Shoes: The area is bigger than expected, so wear comfy shoes.
• Light Show: Don’t miss the daily light show at Supertree Grove – it’s a must-see!
• Cloud Forest: Visit on even hours for the misting and take photos first to avoid backtracking.
• Floral Fantasy: Skip it unless you’re really into flowers or photography.
• Skywalk vs. Supertree Observatory: Choose one, as the views are prety similar.
• Enjoy: Don’t rush to take photos; relax and enjoy your day!

20. Check The Hours Before Visiting The Waterfall At Changi Airport

One must-see spot during your first time in Singapore is Changi International Airport. It’s often hailed as one of the world’s best airports, and the indoor waterfall, known as the Jewel, is a highlight even if you’re not catching a flight.

Here’s a thing to know when traveling to Singapore: while the Jewel is open 24 hours, the stunning waterfall only operates from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

So, do yourself a favor and double-check the hours before you head over. You don’t want to get there and be disappointed!

 21. Visit Ce La Vie Sky Bar For Stunning Views

Catching the breathtaking views from the top of Marina Bay Sands is a must-do for any Singapore bucket list. There are a few ways to make this happen.

If your budget allows, definitely stay at the Marina Bay Sands. Only guests can access the iconic rooftop pool.

If a hotel stay isn’t in the cards, you can still enjoy the views from the SkyPark Observation Deck for $32 SGD. Just remember to book ahead if you’re planning to visit after 5 PM.

But one of my favorite Singapore travel tips is to head over to the Ce La Vie Sky Bar instead. Located right next to the observation deck, for $30 SGD you get a drink and a comfy seat. Just be sure to check the dress code.

This way, you can sip a cocktail while soaking in the stunning views, without spending a fortune on a hotel stay. It’s a perfect way to relax and enjoy the city skyline.

22. Singapore Doesn’t Really Do Beaches

Even though Singapore has 64 islands, it’s better known for its city attractions than its beaches. This really surprised me and is one of those key things to know when traveling to Singapore.

Sentosa Island has a few man-made beaches like Palawan and Siloso. They’re fine for a quick summer getaway, but don’t expect them to compete with the stunning beaches you’ll find in Thailand or Bali.

If you’re looking for the perfect beach day, I’d suggest combining your Singapore trip with a visit to nearby destinations known for their beautiful beaches.
