Sri Lanka History Facts

Before you go to Sri Lanka, let me give you a quick history lesson. This island spent over four centuries under foreign rule – first the Portuguese in 1505, followed by the Dutch in 1630, and then the British in 1815.

It wasn’t until 1948 that Sri Lanka declared its independence, later becoming a republic in 1972.

That’s why, as you explore cities like Galle and Colombo, you’ll likely notice European colonial architecture alongside ancient Sinhalese sites and Buddhist temples.

Unmissable Things to Do in Sri Lanka

Alright, now that we’ve brushed up on history, let’s talk about some must-do experiences in Sri Lanka, especially if you love history as much as I do:

  • Explore the Sri Lanka Cultural Triangle which includes the ancient cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya.
  • Pay a visit to the sacred Tooth Relic Temple in Kandy: it´s a must-visit destination in Sri Lanka, especially for Buddhists

  • Marvel at Dambulla Cave temple: the largest cave temple complex in the country

2. Stunning Beaches

Sri Lanka Surfing

Now, I’ll be honest, surfing isn’t my thing. I’ve tried it out, but it’s just not for me.

However, if you’re a surfer, Sri Lanka is the place to be. Head to Arugam Bay and Weligama for some of the most incredible waves – it’s why they call it ‘The New Bali’!

If you’re new to surfing, no worries – there are plenty of surf camps in Sri Lanka to help you catch your first wave.

Sri Lanka: Dream Destination for Digital Nomads

In my opinion, Sri Lanka is also the perfect destination for digital nomads like us who need to work while on the move.

Though I didn’t have enough time during my last trip to Sri Lanka, I could easily picture myself starting my days at a charming café in Mirissa, getting some work done, and then enjoying lazy afternoons swimming and chilling under the shade of palm trees.

Now, that’s what I call the perfect work-life balance, don’t you think?

3. Incredible Hiking in Sri Lanka

But wait a minute – Sri Lanka isn’t just about its breathtaking beaches!

If, like me, you’re all about immersing yourself in nature and seeking out adventure, then get ready for some incredible hiking spot on this island paradise.

Let me share with you some of my absolute favorite hiking trails in Sri Lanka:

a. Catch the Sunrise at Adam’s Peak

Let’s start with one of the most sacred sites in Sri Lanka – Adam’s Peak. Legend has it that Buddha, Lord Shiva, and even Adam himself left their footprint at the summit.

The climb is a bit challenging, taking around 3-4 hours, but it’s free and mainly consists of steps, so that’s a plus!

And let me tell you, witnessing the sunrise from this sacred peak is an experience like no other, making it one of the top places to visit in Sri Lanka.

b. Hike Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock

Not up for the challenge of Adam’s Peak? No worries! Little Adam’s Peak offers a more manageable hike with equally stunning views, this time overlooking Ella Rock.

And as for Ella Rock itself, while I didn’t gather the energy to attempt it (blame my laziness!), it’s definitely an option for those seeking a bit more adventure.

c. Check out Pidurangala Rock for the Best Views of Sigiriya Rock

Instead of going up Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, I’d suggest giving Pidurangala Rock a try. It’s not as crowded, way cheaper ($3 compared to $36), and the view from the top is just as stunning.

Plus, Pidurangala Rock is one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in Sri Lanka, especially if you want to capture Sigiriya Rock in your photos.

For details on both hikes and exactly what to expect, make sure to read Alexandra’s Ultimate Guide.

d. More Ideas: Explore Sri Lanka’s Natural Beauty

And guess what? Your Sri Lanka adventure doesn’t stop there! There’s still so much more to explore.

Hike to World’s End at Horton Plains National Park or lose yourself in the Knuckles Mountain Range for an unforgettable experience in Sri Lanka’s natural wonders.

Even if you’re not the fittest person around (trust me, I’m no marathon runner!), I highly recommend picking one of these seven hikes when visiting Sri Lanka.

Just take your time, stay hydrated, and I assure you, it’ll be worth every step!

4. Scenic Train Ride from Kandy to Ella

Why visit Sri Lanka? Let me share an experience that truly makes your Sri Lankan adventure worth it – the breathtaking train ride from Kandy to Ella.

Trust me, it lives up to every bit of the hype!

Considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world, it takes you through stunning tea plantations, misty mountains, and charming villages along the way.

And here’s the best part – you can stick your head out of the windows and even hang from the doors, just like those iconic Instagram photos you’ve seen!

Check out Jackson’s blog post on Journey Era for all the essential information you need before taking the train from Kandy to Ella.

5. Beautiful Sri Lanka Tea Plantations

Speaking of breathtaking views, this country is famous for its tea production, making a visit to a tea plantation one of the top things to do in Sri Lanka

Most of these plantations are located near Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England.”

Once you’re there, I suggest taking a guided tour to soak in the breathtaking vistas and learn the art of making the perfect cup of tea.

And please, don’t forget to bring back some authentic Ceylon Tea or Lipton Tea – they make for the perfect Sri Lankan souvenirs!

But, let´s all be responsible tourists and avoid parks that offer elephant riding experiences!

Discovering Sri Lanka’s wildlife is an unforgettable experience, and here are some of my favorite activities in Sri Lanka to witness wild animals up close:

  • Embark on an unforgettable safari at Yala National Park

  • Visit the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala.
  • Indulge in birdwatching at Bundala National Park.

So, is Sri Lanka worth visiting? Without a doubt!

While Sri Lanka is usually a fantastic destination, it might not be the right fit for everyone, and that’s totally okay.

Before you start planning your trip to Sri Lanka, there are a few things I believe you should know.

Here are a couple of reasons why you should not visit Sri Lanka in 2024.

1. Unstable Political Situation

Alright, let’s tackle this head-on. Back in 2022, Sri Lanka went through a tough economic crisis, which led to peaceful protests popping up all over the country and even saw the former president stepping down.

Thankfully, things have been settling down since then, and Sri Lanka is getting back on its feet.

Still, it’s always a good idea to stay updated with the latest news about Sri Lanka before locking in your travel plans.

If you’re curious to learn more, here’s a quick rundown a quick rundown of what happened.

2. Sri Lanka Monsoon Season

Now, don’t get me wrong—Sri Lanka’s weather can be absolutely incredible. However, it’s also a bit unpredictable due to its two monsoon seasons.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka is typically between December and April, according to CNTraveler.

However, it’s important to note that these monsoon seasons affect different parts of the island at different times.

So, if you’re planning any outdoor adventures in Sri Lanka (and who wouldn’t be?), be sure to check the forecast before you start packing your bags!

3. Getting Around Sri Lanka Can Be a Hassle

Despite its small size, getting around Sri Lanka can be tricky and time-consuming, especially in more remote areas.

Before you start planning your Sri Lanka itinerary, I highly recommend checking out Nerd´s Nomad Ultimate Guide to Getting Around Sri Lanka.

Seriously, it’s a goldmine of information that covers everything from the best transportation options in Sri Lanka to exactly how to book your train tickets.

Now, let’s talk about driving in Sri Lanka.

Can I Drive in Sri Lanka?

Absolutely! Renting your own tuk-tuk is one of the best ways to explore Sri Lanka at your own pace.

Just a heads-up – driving here is quite the adventure. The roads are bumpy, traffic can be chaotic, and they drive on the left side, which might take some getting used to.

But don’t worry, Sri Lankan people are incredibly friendly and helpful, especially if your tuk-tuk breaks down in the middle of nowhere (which honestly happens more often than you’d think).

Bonus Tip: If you don’t feel comfortable driving in Sri Lanka, consider hiring a private driver or joining a guided tour for a stress-free trip in Sri Lanka.

4. Limited Nightlife In Sri Lanka

If you’re someone who loves hitting the town and partying until dawn, you might want to stay away from Sri Lanka.

While it´s easy to get a drink and there are bars and clubs in the big cities, the nightlife scene is a bit more laid-back compared to other popular tourist destinations in Asia, like the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand.

5. Terrible Wifi

One downside to consider before visiting Sri Lanka is its unreliable Wi-Fi.

Personally, I found it really hard to get anything done on my computer or even hop on a Zoom call. Just something to keep in mind, if you’re working remotely or running a business online.

Fortunately, getting a local SIM card proved to be a game-changer. I highly recommend grabbing one as soon as you touch down, especially if you’re a solo female traveler.

The two main companies are Mobitel and Dialog, and from what I’ve heard, they’re both pretty reliable!

6. Safety Concerns. Is Sri Lanka Safe?

Is Sri Lanka safe? Generally, yes. But like anywhere else, it’s important to stay alert, especially in certain areas, especially after dark.

Stick to well-lit places, trust your instincts, and steer clear of any sketchy situations. I´d also download some useful travel apps to stay connected while traveling Sri Lanka.

Is Sri Lanka Safe for Female Travelers?

In my experience, Sri Lanka is pretty safe for solo female travelers.

While it might not be as popular as destinations like Thailand or Japan for solo female travel, as long as you use your common sense and blend in, you should be okay.

And hey, for that extra peace of mind, consider packing some Travel Safety Items. It never hurts to be prepared, right?

So, while there are reasons not to visit Sri Lanka, don’t let them overshadow all the incredible things to do in Sri Lanka!
