Prefer warmer weather? Southeast Asia has plenty of options. You could relax on Thailand’s beaches, hop between islands in the Philippines, or explore Malaysia’s vibrant cities. Bonus: it’s usually much more affordable than many other winter destinations around the world.

When people think of places to visit in Asia in December, Thailand is always high on the list—and for good reason. The weather is dry, warm, and perfect for exploring after the rainy monsoon season.

• Beaches: Phuket, Krabi, and  Koh Phi Phi are excellent options for a beach gateway. You can spend your time lounging by the sea, taking boat trips to nearby islands, or snorkeling in clear blue waters.
• Culture: If you’re interested in exploring history and traditions, Chiang Mai is a fantastic choice. It’s home to beautiful temples and lively markets. If you’re lucky enough to visit in November, the Loy Krathong festival is a highlight worth experiencing.
• Food: One of my favorite reasons to visit Thailand is definitely the food. Think Pad Thai cooked right on the street, spicy papaya salad, and creamy mango sticky rice — all for just a few dollars.
