For the past ten years, I’ve spent almost every winter exploring Asia, and it’s now my favorite season for travel. Whether it’s skiing in Japan, hiking in Sri Lanka, or soaking up the sun on a beach in Thailand, my winters are filled with variety and adventure.

If you’re chasing snow, countries like Japan, South Korea, and northern China won’t disappoint. My personal favorite? Hokkaido, Japan. It’s one of the top ski destinations in Asia, offering reliable snow and excellent resorts.

Prefer warmer weather? Southeast Asia has plenty of options. You could relax on Thailand’s beaches, hop between islands in the Philippines, or explore Malaysia’s vibrant cities. Bonus: it’s usually much more affordable than many other winter destinations around the world.

For me, Asia in winter is all about flexibility. Whether you’re backpacking on a budget or splurging on a luxurious honeymoon, there’s something for everyone. Each winter trip feels like a completely new experience—and that’s why I keep coming back year after year!

When people think of places to visit in Asia in December, Thailand is always high on the list—and for good reason. The weather is dry, warm, and perfect for exploring after the rainy monsoon season.

• Beaches: Phuket, Krabi, and  Koh Phi Phi are excellent options for a beach gateway. You can spend your time lounging by the sea, taking boat trips to nearby islands, or snorkeling in clear blue waters.
• Culture: If you’re interested in exploring history and traditions, Chiang Mai is a fantastic choice. It’s home to beautiful temples and lively markets. If you’re lucky enough to visit in November, the Loy Krathong festival is a highlight worth experiencing.
• Food: No trip to Thailand is complete without trying the street food. From Pad Thai to mango sticky rice, you’ll find delicious (and affordable) eats everywhere.

From there, Penang is perfect for culture lovers. George Town is full of street art, history, and amazing food. If you need some downtime, Langkawi’s beaches and rainforests are unbeatable for a winter getaway. My beach bag essentials? Sunscreen, a good book, and a reusable water bottle.

• Hot Springs: Nothing beats soaking in an onsen after a cold day. Beppu and Hakone are my favorite places to relax and warm up.
• Festivals: The Sapporo Snow Festival is a must if you’re visiting in winter. The massive snow sculptures and light displays are incredible to see in person.

To get there, I recommend taking a slow boat along the Mekong River, it´s a peaceful way to enjoy the scenery before you even arrive. Once in town, make time to visit Kuang Si Falls, where you can cool off with a swim. Yes, pack a swimsuit even in winter!
